Australian workplace safety recommendations state that hard hats need to be worn on sites when there is a risk of being hit by falling objects or from a collision with solid objects. This covers almost all worksites, so helmets are an essential piece of equipment for construction, civil, building and industrial workers. Hard hats protect workers from impact by deflecting hits to the outer shell. Inside, the harness or suspension system stretches to absorb and spread the shock of impact evenly.

Employers are responsible for providing their workers with Australian Standards compliant hard hats. Note that hard hats or safety helmets must be replaced if damaged, no matter how new or old they are. Additionally, they also have a working life and a 'use by' date stamped on the inside. Ensure your helmet is regularly inspected for damage or cracks and replace it at the first signs of structural wear.
