Advice: night work signs no longer permitted for NSW Traffic Controllers and Roadwork Contractors

Did you know that a range of common night work signs has recently been removed from the RMS approval documents? A phase-out period of two years has just come to an end, which allowed for users to adapt to the changes and change over to the new signs.

As of now, no new night roadwork signs are being manufactured going forward, as the phase-out period ceased on June 30 2020.

From this date onwards, the Traffic Control at Worksites technical manual (TCAWS) specifies that ‘night’ specification signs are no longer to be used on NSW roads. Now that all RMS signs are manufactured with Class 400 retroreflective sheeting, specific night signs are no longer required as the brightness and reflectivity of regular signs is sufficient.

What signs are still current?

In the TCAWS technical manual, the RMS states that the following signs are suitable for night work:

  • Roadwork Ahead (T1-1)
  • Workers Symbol (T1-5)
  • Traffic Controller Symbol (T1-34)

In accordance with AS1742.3 MUTCD – Traffic control for works on roads, these signs are now all manufactured out of Class 400 sheeting. This makes them very reflective and therefore easily visible at night.

T1-1 Roadwork Ahead

T1-34 Traffic Controller

T1-5 Workers

What signs have been superseded?

Originally adopted with the intent of improving visibility in low light conditions, these signs were first manufactured prior to the use of retroreflective sheeting. These signs have now been withdrawn because all signs are now manufactured with Class 400 retroreflective yellow sheeting, and therefore the selection of signs can be standardised with no impact on safety, effectiveness or visibility.

The following signs are no longer valid for use on NSW roads:

  • Night Roadwork Ahead (T1-223)
  • Workers Symbol (T1-224 and T1-5-2)
  • Traffic Controller Symbol (T1-200-2 and T1-200-3)
