Students get hands-on experience at Jaybro’s Industry Immersion Days
Jaybro has recently partnered with MIGAS and local schools in Western Sydney to create career paths for local young people.
Immersion days give students a taste of Jaybro
This month we hosted the first of our school immersion days - a half-day tour of the Jaybro distribution centre in Arndell Park where school students experience what it looks and feels like to work at Jaybro through involvement with different teams and departments.
Students get to find out about different business areas including sales, customer service, marketing, IT, signage production, receiving and dispatch. They are also welcomed into the warehousing and logistics team and can enjoy a warehouse activity that allows students to have a hands-on experience.
Our most recent students from St Andrews College Marayong, St Marys Flexible Learning School and Cathwest Innovation College also heard presentations by two current employees who started their careers as trainees with Jaybro and are now successful in full time roles.
Why partner with local high schools?
Supporting young students - especially Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander youth - is a common goal and purpose that we have established with MIGAS, and more recently several local schools.
Opening our doors to students in the area gives them a taste of ‘work life’ and an opportunity to see if Jaybro is a good fit for them in a traineeship capacity once they are ready to leave school. There are also flexible opportunities for school-based traineeships, where students can continue their studies and work a few hours a week to get hands-on training in a busy and positive work environment.
Creating these opportunities for school-based traineeships has benefits for both the students and for Jaybro. Partnering with local schools helps us do our part to support young people in the Western Sydney region, building their skills, knowledge and confidence.
There is also a benefit to our business in that we attract positive and eager young trainees with fresh ideas and a great work ethic who may have been overlooked by other businesses who hire based on credentials. We believe that attitude is what counts, and we welcome employees into our business based on culture fit, not grades or certificates.
Uniquely placed in a logistics & manufacturing hub
The Western Suburbs of Sydney cover suburbs such as Blacktown, Arndell Park, Erskine Park, St Marys, Mt Druitt, Doonside, Blacktown and Penrith. These areas were labelled by the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian as the major industrial precinct in Western Sydney and a new global hub for logistics and advanced manufacturing.
The region falls into the area of the new Western Sydney Airport which is currently under construction - a precinct that will be heavily marketed as an innovation hub and an attractive area for many global businesses.
This means that Jaybro’s largest distribution centre and warehouse footprint at Arndell Park falls right into this global hub zone. Our Sydney office is uniquely placed to serve this booming area and attract the employees of tomorrow via our local high schools.
Making traineeships a reality for students
Our immersion days aren’t just a once-off excursion: Jaybro and MIGAS will strongly support students who are interested in pursuing traineeship opportunities further. This includes a one-week work experience program. After the work experience period, if the students remain interested in the opportunity we’ll offer a school-based traineeship to kick off their journey into the workforce.
Jaybro has a long history of supporting young people through MIGAS, and our new school immersion program builds on this capability so that we can help more local students build their career in a supportive and dynamic environment with excellent potential to grow and progress.
