Portaboom portable boom gates for Melbourne’s West Gate Tunnel
PROJECT SNAPSHOT
The West Gate Tunnel project aims to deliver an alternative to Melbourne’s busy West Gate Bridge. It will provide a much needed second river crossing, quicker and safer journeys, and remove thousands of trucks from the city’s residential streets.
The project is a partnership between the Victorian Government and Transurban and will be built by a joint venture comprising CPB Contractors and John Holland (CPBJH JV).
THE CHALLENGES
Throughout the ongoing works, the project managers at CPBJH JV have aimed to keep traffic corridors open as much as possible, limiting interruption to commuter journeys. Whilst significant construction works are taking place, adjacent walkways and cycle ways for both pedestrians and workers needed to be managed to ensure safety.
JAYBRO’S SOLUTION
Jaybro’s traffic management team supplied 17 of the versatile Portaboom mobile portable boom gates. These were used to control and manage both pedestrian and vehicular access at key points throughout the West Gate Tunnel site. Placed along the shoulders of the tunnel route, along cycleways and walkways, and at other entry points, the portable boom gates provided effective traffic management. As seen here, the Portaboom units were also used in the stores yard in the East Zone to control vehicular access.
The Portaboom system is ideal for this application, as well as temporary traffic control, road closures, lane closures, access control to worksites, event management, pedestrian management and temporary car park functions.
Designed for operator safety, the unit is operated by remote control meaning workers can stand in a safe zone away from traffic. Able to withstand strong weather and wind speeds of up to 82km an hour, it is stable and yet easy to move when required. Plus, it allows for greater on-site efficiency, as one operator can control up to four units at once.
The 5-minute set up is easy and does not require any tools - simply attach the legs for added stability. Onboard rechargeable batteries provide up to 6,500 up and down movements.
